In 2021, all the 6 monitoring indicators of the urban air quality reached the secondary level of national ambient air quality standard, with 3 consecutive years reaching the national standard. The city also over-fulfilled the task of air quality assessment regarding the excellence rate of air quality index (AQI) , concentration of PM2.5 and PM10.
In year 2021, the air quality of 359 days met the national standard, while 6 days had light air pollution, no higher level of air pollution being recorded. The excellence rate of the city’s air quality index (AQI) was 98.4%, increased by 1.1 percentage point compared to last year. The city’s air quality ranked the 4th in the province, the comprehensive index of air quality was 3.01, ranking the 3rd in the province regarding the improvement of air quality.

Compared with last year, the concentration of main pollutants in Shaoguan urban area showed an overall downward trend. Among the main pollutants, PM2.5 concentration remained at the level of 24 micrograms per cubic meter, which was at its historical low level. At the same time,the concentrations of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide had an evident decline year by year, with the concentration of sulfur dioxide fell into a single-digit level for the first time. All these have shown that the city had effective management and governance on the industrial boilers and furnaces. Data of environmental indicators also shows that Shaoguan’s air quality in 2021 is better than any of the year since since 2014.
