As a cradle of generations of gifted people in history, Shaoguan is home to many celebrities, such as Hou Andu, a key official in the Chen Dynasty, Zhang Jiuling, the famous prime minister of Tang Dynasty, Yu Jing, a notable government official in the Song Dynasty and the like. During Song and Tang Dynasty, poets like Han Yu, Su Shi, Yang Wanli wrote famous poems to admire the landscapes of Shaoguan. In history, Sun Yat-sen led his army, the National Revolutionary Army to Shaoguan twice before Northern Expedition. And Shaoguan had the footrace of the world-known Long March of Red Army. Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Deng Xiaoping, Chen Yi and other predecessors of proletarian revolution have left glorious footprints here. There are 9 counties(districts) and 4796 natural villages belong to the old liberated areas. Shaoguan, the intersection of ancient Central Plain Culture and Bai Yue Culture, is also one of the settlements of Hakka people, with more than 300 Hakka Enclosed Buildings. It is dominated by Cantonese and Hakka and other ethnic minorities languages like the Yao, the She which still remain their own ethnic languages. There are many cultural relics in Shaoguan, with 2831 immovable cultural relics, among which 9 major historical and cultural sites are protected at national level ,47 at provincial level, 23 at city and county level. Moreover, there are 9 intangible cultural heritages at state level, 14 at provincial level and 41 at city level.
